Personal note

It is with deep sadness that I am reporting my beloved Miss Ijit took her last breath at about 0850 on 02 January after a long battle with chronic kidney disease. I had her compassionately euthanized and she died in my arms. Her time had definitely come, as her final night was very miserable for her. See her full obituary here: https://www.mindconnection.com/ijitlamendola.htm

Since her passing, I am unanchored and disoriented. We had our routine and interacted all day long. Now, I wake up to total silence and go to bed the same way. Even unloading the dishwasher in the morning is surreal now. All of the tea saucers and bowls she ate off of during the day aren't in there anymore. Nor are all the spoons used to dish out whatever servings she wanted. It's like this with every task, whether mundane or not. And no more getting a nose kiss before heading off to the store and then being greeted at the door when I return.

She taught me a lot about meeting her emotional and physical needs, so our home was well-suited for a cat. A cat door in front and another in back, each coded to her chip so only she could operate them. Big cat tree. Great litter box set-up complete with night lights. Motion-sensored lighting for her (high-end) kibble that was always restocked before we went to bed so she could eat during the night. Motion-sensor cat fountain, and various other amenities. Special nooks, including her favorite perch in our bedroom; this was a corner nook with a wardrobe canted at an angle to provide a sense of privacy for her while she was able to look out a west window and a north window from the second story.

1. Good News: Where the Intel is Good

Fighting Communism

  1. Barely more than two weeks until our communist rulers no longer control the White House, Senate, and House.

  2. Bill Gates, one of the architects of the C*O*V*I*D scam, donated $50 million to the Cackler's election campaign. Now he seeks peace with Trump. Gates belongs on death row. But perhaps Trump can bring him over from the dark side, to align forces with others making such a move (Bezos, Zuckerberg, etc.). We need every advantage if we are going to stomp out the disease known as Communism.

  3. Joe Manchin rips Brainless for commuting death sentences of horrible people: https://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/joe-manchin-death-penalty-commuted/2024/12/27/id/1193032/

  4. After 90 years in business, Kalmbach Publishing has closed its doors. This company published Discover Magazine and is the trusted source for the eclipse glasses I bought for the 2017 and 2024 Great American Eclipse events. Kalmbach published a variety of excellent titles beyond just Discover (which will live on, having been bought by another publisher). Communism requires ignorance to survive as a political power, and this loss is something the communists are certainly cheering about. To help stem the advance of communism, we need to support the publishers of magazines that inform us. I don't mean inform us about current events and politics necessarily, I mean to inform us generally so we are not abjectly ignorant and thus ripe for communist gas lighting games. Having a good general knowledge base is important to being able to correctly interpret new incoming information or, as is the case quite often, disinformation.

  5. If you get in a conversation with a Trump Derangement Syndrome victim who still supports the Cackler, make sure to point out to that person Kamala's campaign paid out as much as half a million dollars per celebrity to get an endorsement while Trump did not have to pay a dime to get endorsement from celebrities. If you had to pay thousands of dollars per kid to get any kids to show up at your daughter's birthday party, what does that say about your daughter? Same thing.

  6. Texas AG Bill Paxton has successfully stopped the communist plan to dispose of materials intended for our border wall. The communists are pulling out all of the stops to destroy what they before they lose the White House to people who actually don't hate this country,.

The C*O*V*I*D* Scam

  • The rapidly appearing metastatic cancers are still occurring and strokes among those in their 20s are still occurring. And yet, nobody has been arrested for the jab scam. This may change.
  • For quite some time now, we have had proof that The Jab increases the likelihood you will get C*O*V*I*D. This is why it's banned for those under 65 in the UK. Yet here in the USA, some universities still require it for admission! And those universities get away with it! Why are the students not simply boycotting, and forcing the universities to bow to them (the customer)?
  • In some cases, the mental retardation caused by the gas lighting appears to be permanent. Here's a video made shortly after Christmas 2024: https://twitter.com/i/status/1872334465374326965

  • Sweden's face covering ban went into effect on 01 January. Violators of the ban face fines of up to 1,000 Swiss francs, or about $1,144. Exceptions to the ban include reasons relating to health, safety, local customs, or weather conditions. You can't feel safe in USA banks, but at least in Sweden that is now possible.
  • The masktards are essentially wearing a Petri dish on their face and exhaling bacteria on everyone else. They are also making it difficult to prevent crime or to catch the criminals afterwards. Maybe it is time to start shaming these people out of their bad behavior. Or at least to ask, "I see you are wearing a bacteria Petri dish on your face. Why would you do that?"

Bye Bye from Brainless

The attacks on our economy continue.

  • More billions for the Ukraine national suicide plan, something for which America should be held accountable. It is shameful in the extreme, we as a nation are guilty of war crimes.
  • More billions for "student loan forgiveness" wealth transfers. They make it sound like they are doing something positive, when in fact they are stealing billions of dollars from hard-working Americans (many of whom never went to college, and many of whom went to college and paid all their costs from their own pockets already) and then giving it to people who made poor decisions about their college plans and ended up with an essentially worthless degree from an essentially worthless communism indoctrination center.
  • More billions on the Green New Scam, shoveling out money before January 20th arrives even though the American People have spoken and are clearly not in favor of this stupidity.

The effects include food shortages, record levels of homeless people, record inflation (an astounding 100% in the two years ending August of 2023), record numbers of business failures, record levels of loan defaults, record levels of credit card debt, record egg prices, record beef prices, and even record prices for pinto beans! Brainless Biden claims the economy is in much better shape than when he took office, which is totally a joke. A big problem is there are actually people who believe that BS! And they vote!

These effects were entirely predictable. Why? Every dollar mis-spent this way is a dollar the the government doesn't have to spend. The missing money gets counterfeited by the Federal Reserve, thereby adding to the size of the money supply relative to the basket of goods and services. That is, these billions and billions of dollars being wasted are actually being burned to fuel inflation. And not by just a little bit.

  • It's worth noting that the homeless population grew by 18% in the last year alone. If anyone ever tells you the Democrats are compassionate, throw that back in their face. Along with the explanation as to why (see above).
  • Brainless spent 570 days (nearly 40%) of his Presidency on vacation, or the damage would have been much worse. Why not ask your boss to increase your paid vacation to 40% of your full-time hours? Let me know how that goes!

Cancelling Christmas

Several European countries cancelled Christmas, using as their rationale that they blame it on the increasing Muslim population. Talk about insulting Muslims! Here is an item from Jeff Childer's Coffee and Covid on this subject:

"In one viral TikTok video mentioned in the article, a French Muslim expressed shock that the manger and other Christmas decorations had been purged from the local town hall in the name of secular separation of Church and State. But the Muslim man was outraged. 'Our friends the Christians, our brothers, they are in a Christian country,' he said. 'Yes, laïcité, fine. But, no. They have the right to decorate their town hall for their holiday. Mangers don’t bother me … Politicians, you are going to kill France, you are going to kill Christians! It’s crazy!'”

In my own case, I do not overly celebrate Christmas though I do enjoy the season. I do not wish people "Happy Holidays" but I wish them "Merry Christmas." The account from Mr. Childers rings true to me, because over the years some of my Muslim brethren have wished me a Merry Christmas. As have many of my Jewish brethren. So it's not some competing religion that is driving this movement. It is a competing ideology, one based on Discrimination, Enmity, and Immorality. Yes, you guessed it, DEI. Its parent ideology is known for hatred, ignorance, and conformity. Yes, you guessed it -- communism.

Cancelling Christmas is one step along the path of cancelling Christians, Muslims, and Jews. Communism holds those faiths to be worse than useless. Modern communists have the same opinion of the adherents of those faiths. Brainless Biden referred to the anti-communists in the November election as "garbage."

This dynamic is why Christmas is more important than ever. It is the first barrier to fall before we all fall. And we cannot let that happen.

Defending the Fairer Sex

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) for deceptive practices that endanger women. “The NCAA is intentionally and knowingly jeopardizing the safety and wellbeing of women by deceptively changing women’s competitions into co-ed competitions.” He added, “When people watch a women’s volleyball game, for example, they expect to see women playing against other women—not biological males pretending to be something they are not. Radical ‘gender theory’ has no place in college sports.”

Other News

  • The left wing "Politifacts" (more like PolitiFRAUD) named Donald Trump as the teller of the "Lie of the Year" for his statement that Haitian illegal immigrants were eating people's pets. Even before Trump was "fact checked" on this issue during his tag team "debate, a video of police responding to a cat eating incident was already in circulation. I mentioned this video in our 08 DEC issue, it looks like the ninnies at Politifacts need to subscribe to this newsletter! Please write to them and suggest it! • I am proud to report that my own Senator Marshall (R, Kansas) is heading up the MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) caucus in the Senate.

  • Cackling Kamala just does not know when to shut up. Watch her nasal whine her way into yet another moment of abject stupidity and gross insensitivity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIRb5HPsE-U
  • "Crackpot Kathy" Hochul, the governor of the same state that put Daniel Penny through hell and tried to put him in prison for the "crime" of saving his fellow passengers from violent assault, claims the New York Subway System has become safer under her watch. Does this not seem like justification for removing her from office due to clear proof that she is either suffering from delusions or is too dishonest (even by NY standards) to hold office? Why are New Yorkers not doing a recall on her? What is wrong with them?
  • Communists who call themselves Democrats are in a dither over Elon Musk's involvement in MAGA and the Trump administration. By their "logic" it is much better to have idiots and failures who leave financial devastation behind them (Tracy Abrams and Cackling Kamala both ran campaigns that were financial disasters). Of course, this is not news. But it has reached a new level of absurdity.

  • Chloe Cole (10:05): https://www.prageru.com/video/chloe-cole-transition-surgery-was-the-biggest-mistake-of-my-life
  • Proponents of the Trans Kid Scandal have yet to explain how mutilating a boy's genitals changes his Y chromosome to X or how giving a teenage girl a radical double mastectomy changes one of her X chromosomes to a Y chromosome. I am sure they are working on it, they probably just need someone like Fauci to explain it "from the science".

  • Hatred is a very strong emotion, and stupidity is a very strong characteristic. Both are exceedingly difficult to overcome. Costco's Board is slated to vote on 23 January on whether to end its Discrimination, Enmity, and Immorality program or continue it. Sadly, the hatred and stupidity faction within the company appears poised to prevail, using facetious arguments.
  • It is interesting that underlying the Discrimination, Enmity, and Immorality religion is the idea that individual efforts have no effect on individual outcomes, and that all outcomes are based on your skin color not your character and hard work. Based on this, would it not follow that the Discrimination, Enmity, and Immorality people should not bother to do anything to push their agenda since outcomes and effort are completely unrelated?

  • Jimmy Carter died at age 100, on 29 December 2024. He was much aligned by both the left and the right. But here are a couple of things to consider. The "Carter Doctrine" created an aircraft carrier fleet specifically for the Gulf region, to keep oil flowing. Every POTUS since then has maintained the Carter Doctrine. Along with Trump, he was one of only two Presidents in the past 100+ years to keep us out of any new wars. So like Trump, he was not a neocon and therefore had the forces of the deep state aligned against him. But still, he was ineffectiveness in many key areas. His impotence in the face of the Iran hostage situation was the main reason that Reagan beat him 489 to 49 in the Electoral College. Keep that number in mind, if we'd had honest elections in 2020 and 2024 the ratio would have been about the same. The communists know this, thus they focus their efforts on cheating.
  • A recent article characterized the Brainless administration as a "comedy of errors". Plays are written as either comedies or tragedies, the last four years have been tragic in the extreme.

3. Brainpower tip

Some years ago, I read that only 20% of graduating high school seniors could pass a test of Standard Written English (SWE). Not ace it, pass it. Huge difference. This sounds stunning, until you listen to how people talk. I think it's fair to say that 80% of adults say "lay" when they mean "lie" as in, "I am going to LAY down now." (Lay what down?)

Other anomalous speech includes modifiers used with the word "one" as in "That is absolutely one." I was being a bit tricky there, the word is "unique" which literally means "one of a kind". The misuse of "impact" to mean "affect," the misuse of "podium" to mean "lectern" (you stand ON a podium but BEHIND a lectern -- pod means foot), "compliment" to mean "complement", and the common use of "I" as an object "They met with Steve and I") are some other clues that the statistic is correct. SWE, of course, entails more than just correct word choices.

So what language are 80% of adults speaking if not English? It's called "the vernacular". Because it is loose in its interpretation instead of being precise, people commonly fail to understand each other. Even if you are able to ace the SWE test, you still have to translate from the vernacular to English and you will often be misunderstood by vernacular speakers if you speak standard English. However, the misunderstanding tends to be "close enough" in nature rather than far off the mark. And that's in no small part due to how we handle the difference in what we say versus what we meant and in what we hear versus what we understand.

One solution to this problem is taught in courses in leadership, management, interpersonal skills, sales, and communications. What you do is rephrase what the other person said and ask if that is correct. This solution is not without its problems, one of which is you may be reading something and can't ask the author. So we rely on other clues, such as the context (what else was the person saying and what was the situation?) and common sense. If you told me that the speaker stood behind the podium, for example, I would realize you meant the lectern. If you said the speaker stood on the lectern, however, I would not assume you meant the podium because that is not the direction in which the mistake is made.

So despite frequent misunderstandings, we generally do OK in overall communication. But it's still an extra processing load.

On top of this, however, we must deal with deliberately deceptive speech. Words are misused to say one thing but mean another. An example is when The Cackler kept talking about how she was out to "save our democracy." This is an odd thing for an American to save, what's up with that? Our country is a republic, not a democracy. Did she mean "save our democratic process?" If so, why was her party so blatantly undemocratic about things for the past 20+ years? Things like Hillary's Russiagate Hoax certainly are not democratic. What the users of this phrase mean is THEIR democracy, not one that any sane person would want. Under THEIR democracy, you are not free to dissent or even to think. Under THEIR democracy, all voters are disenfranchised because ballots are created as needed to get the "election" results they want. Under THEIR democracy, they hold a primary election and then jettison the top three winners (as they did in 2020).

Take a look at products that are incorrectly called "food". Nothing that is highly processed is food any longer. Sure, people eat it. But instead of being nourished by it, they are made sick by it. Look at something like "low fat milk". How do you think the fat is removed? It's not a benign process. What about Lite foods? Less fat, and 10 times the sugar plus to give it the body that the fat did it's loaded with emulsifiers. What is an emulsifier? Basically, it's a detergent. Consuming emulsifiers in the quantities present in highly processed foods will coat your intestinal walls in a way the stops your guts from working as they should. You get alternating constipation and diarrhea, gas and bloating, malabsorption, toxic biota, and other problems.

Speaking of products, what about "soft" toilet paper? It's not actually any softer, it is simply less sturdy. Less force is required before it breaks apart into "dingleberries", thus it not only is less useful in getting you clean it leaves a mess of its own. So why do they call it "soft?" Because people like that idea (it sounds luxuriant) but would not like the idea of "falls apart faster". Soft is misused in other ways, too. For example fabric "softener". When people over-dry fabrics (e.g., dry too long or at too high a heat), the fibers shrink at different rates and are also damaged such that they "split" and this feels rough to the touch. The solution, of course, is to never use high heat and to take items out of the dryer while still damp and hang them up to dry. But a lot of people do not know this. So they buy a fabric "softener". It doesn't repair the damaged fibers or in any way make the fabric soft. It simply coats the fabric with a slimy rancid fat whose rancidity is covered over by a petrochemical perfume that is (with most of these products) carcinogenic.

Have you ever bought health insurance? I doubt it. Assuming such a product exists, and I don't think it does, how would you file a claim? "I missed my workout yesterday" or "I ran out of broccoli" and they send you a check? The insurance industry and the medical industry lie, lie, lie about this. The insurance industry provides medical insurance and the medical industry provides medical services. Very few doctors are healthy, and in fact during their residency are subjected to sustained sleep deprivation. Asking a doctor for nutritional advice is hazardous to your health. For example, they are still recommending seed oils. This substitution of "health" for "medical" is a deliberate attempt to deceive. In all of my interactions with medical insurers or medical services providers, I refuse the gas lighting and correct them.

It's a common ploy to refer a general rise in prices as "inflation." That is a deliberate lie. Inflation is an increase in the money supply relative to the basket of goods and services. For the two years ending August 2023, the supply of money increased 83% while the basket of goods and services sharply contracted (as evidenced by empty shelves in stores and "not in stock" all over Amazon). That's more than 100% inflation in only two years. But look at how the lamestream media lied about this by misusing the word inflation.

We even saw the Inflation Enhancement Act, which resulted in trillions more dollars being created out of thin air, referred to as the Inflation REDUCTION Act. A bald-faced lie!

Sometimes the correct words are used, but in a deceptive way. Pick up a can or bag of cat food and read the ingredients. Maybe the first or second one is "meat byproducts" which sounds like it might be meat but then among the top five ingredients you have four grains (always corn, always wheat, and then some others that are often variations of the first two). So the "Chicken Recipe" pet food is just corn and wheat with some ground up chicken feet and beaks thrown in. Clearly, an attempt to deceive.

You can't go around insisting that people and corporations speak clearly and honestly. Ditto for communist politicians.

One thing I do is read between the lines or listen to the silences. What is it they are NOT saying? Why this particular choice of words? I've also learned to have an ear for obfuscation. I do not know how to teach this, it's like having an eye for art. Some people call it having a BS detector. But I can tell you that you can see big clues when the person doesn't actually say anything despite spewing a bunch of words. The Cackler, for example, was mocked for her "word salads".

People who communicate well tend to use "simple", common words instead of pulling something out of a dictionary in an attempt to impress others with their erudition. Or, as I should have said, their smarts. See the point? They use simpler and fewer words to say the same thing, go light on adjectives and even lighter on adverbs, and don't mix multiple ideas into the same sentence. They make their point quickly, directly, and clearly. They also speak and write predominantly in the active voice, while obfuscators prefer long strings of unrelated ideas stated in the passive voice.

Another thing I do is look up words. When the Centers for Disinformation and Censorship were saying to wear masks, I asked, "What is a mask?" They seemed loose on the definition, so I went with the most stringent one they were seemingly talking about (the N95). It's worn in hospitals. It's also worn in construction and is sold in hardware stores and big box home centers. Right on the box, it says the N95 rating means it blocks "up to 95%" of particles .300 microns or larger. The phrase "up to 95%" does not mean "at least 95%". It means anywhere between 0% and 95%. What about .300 microns? It turns out there is no virus anywhere close to that size, so this mask would not provide you any virus protection even if you somehow got one with zero manufacturing defects and a perfect cloth mesh that somehow doesn't vary bigger than .300 microns and glued it to your skin. A few seconds of research is all it took me to destroy the mask narrative.

Above all, stay vigilant. Don't accept statements as true simply because they are made. Recognize that what is stated and what is real are often polar opposites. If in doubt, ask questions in drill-down style. Did you ever notice that nobody backed JD Vance into a corner, but that was easily done to his communist counterpart? That's because Vance was clear in what he said and told the truth while Walz waltzed around things, obfuscated, deflected, and flat-out lied. You try to drill down Vance, and you come away with proof he wasn't lying. You drill down Walz, and very quickly you see he is lying. It's a powerful technique.

4. Finance tip

We buy things, but sometimes have to return them. The idea is to get our money back, but certain mistakes can cost you. Here are some tips to protect your return.
  • Reduce the need for a return to begin with. Don't impulse buy. Plan your purchases. Read the page online or examine the product in the store.
  • Reduce the need for a return to begin with. If there's a problem, contact the merchant. This means often faster resolution with less hassle.
  • When you get something, check it out right away. You usually have 30 days from date of delivery to initiate a return.
  • Open packaging carefully. The packaging is part of the product, and it generally isn't replaceable by the merchant or the distributor. Do not write on the item or its packaging. Assume you are taking it for a test drive, not that it's yours to do what you want to -- until you decide for sure to keep it.

When shipping something back

  • Use a box. Do not ship in the "gift box" as you will ruin the gift box and the cost can be deducted from your return.
  • Include in the box something with your order number and date of purchase.
  • Seal the seam with tape, and ensure the box is taped in a way that the recipient can easily open it by running a box cutter down the seam. Tape all over the box won't make the contents any safer, but it will make the box more dangerous to open. It will usually delay your refund by a day or two. If the recipient accidentally damages the contents trying to get inside the overtaped box, that will be on you not on them.
  • Use a method with tracking number and get the package scanned (never just drop it off).
  • To the previous point, do not drop something in the USPS dropbox unless you scan it first using the kiosk (or whatever method you use). Else, if USPS loses the package before scanning it you cannot file a lost package claim.

When following up

  • Wait at least one business day before inquiring about your refund.
  • Be polite, and don't accuse the merchant of wrong doing just because they didn't stop everything they were doing and pull your package out from the stack of packages they got late in the day.
  • Don't file a case with the marketplace or a chargeback with the credit card company unless the merchant is actually giving you the runaround. That will prevent the merchant from initiating your refund until the case is adjudicated. If you are inclined to have the marketplace or card issue step in, advise the merchant first. In such a case, it is best to call so you have a real-time conversation. If that can't be done, allow a few hours for an e-mail reply.

5. Security tip

Most scams involve duping people who don't ask the right questions. Ask the right questions, and you don't get scammed. You don't get conned into getting a shot that will forever reduce your disease immunity and may very well ruin your health. You don't get conned into supporting politicians whose policies are adverse to your well-being, or into supporting organizations that support them such as the Association Against Retired People (AARP).

One way to avoid being duped by scams is to ask the mechanism question.

Consider the rabies shot, which is mandated for cats and dogs in most counties in the USA. On its surface (as with any scam), this seems to be a good thing. Nobody wants their pet getting rabies. Now let's ask the mechanism question. By what mechanisms would your pet get rabies? On of the standard answers is squirrel bites. Absurd when you think about it, cats and dogs are not stupid enough to get bitten by an animal that can crack walnuts between its jaws, though perhaps little kids are that stupid and they are not required to get the shot. Other standard answers are variations on this theme. Yet, the typical pet is almost never in a situation where any of these "reasons" would materialize.

My county requires getting a one-year or three-year rabies vaccine. They are the same dose and same formula, just the paperwork is different. I will now prove that by asking the mechanism question again. By what mechanism does the three year option last three times as long? It's not three times the dose (same dose), it's not three times the time release (there's no time release element involved and even if there were, by what mechanism?), and it's not because one vaccine produced three times the immune response. In fact, you either get the immune response or you do not. Having asked the mechanism question, I then posed it privately to various people in the veterinary industry. All came clean with the same answer, because to do otherwise would mean to be caught in a lie.

You can apply this to all sorts of scams and false assurances. For example, some supplement that purports to make you "lose weight" (lose fat). By what mechanism? The usual answer is by overstimulating the adrenal system, which of course will result in the body's overcorrecting in the other direction and causing you to take increasing doses until you figure out it's not working.

Most public buildings have signs barring fire arms. It seems odd to me that the owners/operators any public building would want it to be a criminal safety zone, a place where violent criminals do not have to worry about being shot by law-abiding citizens. Upon further investigation of such odd policies, we find the alleged purpose is to protect the law-abiding citizens who enter the building. So now we ask the mechanism question. By what mechanism does disarming potential victims protect them from violent assault? Nobody has ever provided an intelligent answer to this question, because there isn't one.

The mechanism question takes various forms. One of those is "Exactly how does that work? Notice the word "exactly." Something you find in scams is they are not exact. Nor is it adequately explained how they work. There's always a "You can't get there from here" aspect, because the getting there part does not exist. You're here, then you're magically there.

What other scams do we get exposed to? Let's consider get rich quick schemes, which have been hawked excessively during this economic depression. The purpose of any such scheme is to separate people from their money, and they do that by promising easy riches. And there's not a logical "get there from here" aspect. You're here, then you're magically there. Please explain the in-between. One scam going now is you can simply make audio recordings and get filthy rich selling them on Amazon. As if there's no competition and as if professional narrators don't exist and as if anybody can easily determine what people are willing to pay for and then produce it for them. But the "getting there" part is why there are professional narrators, it's not an easy job to do well. If it were, then everybody would do it and nobody would pay for it.

Read the preceding sentence again. That is a key concept to spotting a scam. A common pitch is "It's easy and we'll show you how to do it if you pay us" but if they are pitching it to millions of people then they will quickly flood the market and nobody will get rich because nobody would pay for it. This is classic supply and demand theory, which leads us to another question. If this is such a money maker, why would you increase the supply against limited demand and thus reduce your own earnings? The fact that the program is being pitched at all tells you it does not work!

See all of my climbing videos here: https://tinyurl.com/ClimbingSigChannel. Some cool climbing  videos:

My hardest climb ever, a 5.11d on lead: https://youtu.be/UT5h0heUUBc . I made a dumb mistake initially, letting the rope wrap over my shoulder. Watch what happens.

The scale:

  • Beginner: 5.6. 5.7. 5.8, 5.9  (roped) / VV, V0, V1, V2 (boulder)
  • Intermediate: 5.10a, b, c, d ;5.11a, b, c, d  / V3, V4, V5, V6
  • Advanced: 5.12a, b, c, d; 5.13a, b, c, d. / V7, V8, V9, V10.
  • Elite and Pro: Even harder. Almost nobody climbs at either level at any of the 6 local climbing gyms.

For a long time, it was true that the average American gained 10 lbs over the winter holidays and then lost 8 or 9 of them before the next round of holidays. And this pound or two accumulated over the years. By observation, we know this is no longer true. It is now the exceptional American who accumulates at "only" this rate. The reason is the ubiquity of processed food all year round. Yet each New Year (and at other times), millions of people around the world embark on a fat loss effort. And they generally don't have great success with it.

Some strategies that do not work

  • Vowing to lose weight. This puts the emphasis on the wrong thing. First, it's fat you want to lose. Not weight (else, you could achieve your goal by amputating your legs). Second, you are focusing on the result instead of on the means to get there.
  • Joining a gym. This is a very common strategy. A person joins a gym and then embarks on a program that conditions the body to save calories. This includes treadmill and other "cardio". The person fails to execute a program that stimulates the adaptive response. That response causes a testosterone spike with each workout, and testosterone signals your body to reduce fat.
  • Sucking down protein drinks. This is commonly done after a workout. This will actually cause an insulin response, and insulin is antagonistic to testosterone.
  • Going to GNC and asking the clerk. This person probably has no clue.
  • Buying "weight loss" supplements. There are some that work, but generally these are stimulants that will create dependency and also burn out your adrenal system.

The gist of it is there is no shortcut and there's nothing in a bottle that is going to melt the pounds away.

Some other strategies that do not work

  • Counting calories. It's not as simple as reducing by 500 calories per day and seven days later having lost a full pound. It doesn't work that way.
  • Cutting out carbs. First, this is not actually possible. Second, people who seek to maximize the adaptive response actually "carb up." But what some people actually mean is eliminating bread and other processed grain products, and that does work.
  • Adding protein. I knew a guy whose fat loss strategy included consuming a tub of whey protein powder throughout a week. It didn't work, because he was just adding extra calories. And with protein, you have to be very careful to not get too much protein at a time else you will get an insulin response.

  • Various "special food" diets like the cabbage diet and the "banana recipe". The cabbage diet is a way of reducing caloric intake by displacing higher-calorie foods with low-calorie cabbage. The banana recipe is a way of reducing calorie intake by taking advantage of the fiber in the banana, there's nothing magical about it.
  • Fasting or severe calorie restriction to hit the target weight or body fat level. This is harsh on your body, and it will also reduce the energy you need for high intensity interval training (HIIT).
  • Add in treadmill time. Not only is this boring, it is counterproductive. Low-intensity exercise trains your body to conserve fat, not to burn it. This is why you hear Mr. Olympia types talk about their squats and deadlifts, but you never hear them talk about their (non-existent) time boring themselves to death on a treadmill.

My strategy

I use a strategy based on what you might call the bodybuilder fat loss protocol. There isn't an official strategy by that name, but there are practices that work well for body builders. I've adapted these and added a seventh to the list below:

Practice #1. Reduce calories slightly by reducing some macro. Most body builders choose carbs, I choose fat. So does Jeff Cavaliere of Athlean-X fame. We don't eliminate fat, we just cut back on it. I will, for example, use less butter and coconut oil in my sugar-free/wheatless cookies and I may skip avocados for a couple of months. Carb reduction will work, also. One guy told me he stops eating honey during the summer months and cuts back on fruit then too. I didn't ask how much fruit, but this is something I also reduce as a photoshoot gets near. I may, for example, eat only one banana in the afternoon instead of my customary two.

Practice #2. Plan your meals. I meal prep each night, and by meal prep I mean I make the basis for two of my six daily meals. When it's time to eat them, I merely slice up boiled eggs or whatever it takes to complete that meal. The portion size is strictly controlled, because what is there is all there is.

Practice #3. Perform HIIT. To most people, this means a separate effort that involves doing a series of sprints. My approach is to use very short rest periods during my resistance training. This gives more muscle tension with the same weight, thus you get more of the adaptive response with less strain on tendons. It also keeps your metabolic stress high, which also improves the adaptive response. And it just burns more calories, period. Even better, this approach pulls calories from stored fat. The one downside is because it keeps your metabolic stress high, it is very difficult to push through.

Practice #4. Do compound movements. Squats and other multi-muscle group exercises are classed as compound movements. They burn a lot of calories because they use a lot of muscles, including the many small stabilizer muscles. They also jack metabolic stress up. Always start your training session with compound movements, rather than isolation exercises.

Practice #5. Add extra stimulus. You can increase the adaptive response by adding extra stimulus. What does this mean? Find a way to increase any of these three factors: metabolic stress, cellular damage, time under tension. Examples, respectively: use stacking or supersets, change your angle so you emphasize working at the extension, and reduce your weight so you can do more reps.

Practice #6. Eat and train on a schedule, don't leave these things to chance. A skipped meal puts you into calorie conservation mode and a skipped workout will stop your fat-burning momentum. A rushed workout isn't the answer, because there is a difference between checking off the box and eliciting the adaptive response. Plan time into your schedule for these activities, and follow your plan.

Practice #7.  Go on a house cleaning binge. It takes a lot of energy to truly clean a house. Many people confuse swishing a brush in the bowl with cleaning a toilet. They fail to clean that "under the lip" area, something that requires a lot of scrubbing to get clean. Especially if you are using a worn-out soft-bristle toothbrush. Wiping every inch of your wall space with a microfiber cloth means a lot of squatting down, reaching over, bending, stretching, etc. It's a workout. Then there are the floors....

Some general principles

  • Don't expect miracles. Expect the fat loss process to take time.
  • Always use good form in your workouts. This means much more than simply not tossing the weights up and down. Pay very close attention to your angles and to which muscles you feel being worked.
  • Keep your traps out of your shoulder exercises. The most effective way to do this for median (side) delts is to put your arms at such an angle that the median delts are at or near full extension during the movement.
  • Carb up for Leg Day. It is your single most productive training day, don't shortchange it by playing calorie games. If you take in an extra 300 calories by dint of some extra oats the night before or the morning of, that's like a $300 investment that pays you back $1,000. This is so because if you can fully kick in the adaptive response you will have elevated testosterone for several days and testosterone boosts fat burning.
  • Do not consume wheat, corn, or processed sugar (cane, beet, corn, etc.). All of these stimulate an insulin response, and insulin is antagonistic to testosterone. One sugary drink after your workout, and you just wiped out the main product of that workout. The same goes for downing a 40g whey protein shake, it will elevate your insulin so don't do it.

At www.supplecity.com, you'll find plenty of informative, authoritative articles on maintaining a lean, strong physique. It has nothing to do with long workouts or impossible to maintain diets. In fact:
  • The best workouts are short and intense.
  • A good diet contains far more flavors and satisfaction than the typical American diet.

7. Factoid

Communism is socialism without property rights. Marx held that socialism is a temporary stage on the way to communism, and that communism would be a sort of paradise. One reality is that socialism has always increased poverty and decreased liberty. Another reality is that communism is actually poverty for all and liberty for none (excluding the tiny ruling class).

8. Thought for the Day

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. Yet, wealth division is the primary strategy behind Bidenomics. No wonder the economy is a disaster.
