1. Brainpower tip
An early Christian writer said that the love of money is the root of all kinds
of evil (that was the actual wording, not the common misquote that money is
the root of all evil). We certainly have plenty of evidence supporting his
view. But a far more pernicious root of evil is insecurity. Ask yourself
why, for example, a person feels a frequent "need" to put down other people.
That's a defense mechanism for overcoming insecurity. If you look at various
negative behaviors, you will see insecurity is often the underlying driver.
Monumental evil now exists because of insecurity. In the USA, we have not
had an actual election for federal offices in over 150 years because of
insecurity. How can that be? Well, insecurity is what drives "approval
seeking behavior." This is a condition in which people subjugate thinking
and judgment to the need for approval.
What does this mean for your brainpower? My first climbing instructor, Paul
Hartman, is the epitome of competence and thus confidence. When someone
tries to manipulate him via the approval card, he says, "I know I'm good. I
don't need your approval."If you have genuine reasons to be confident,
then know you are good and don't be concerned with whether another person or
group agrees with you. If they disagree, that is out of avarice or ignorance
on their part. It's no reflection on you. Of course, confidence and
arrogance are not the same thing. In fact, arrogance is a face put on over
an underlying insecurity. A confident person will listen, then evaluate. An
arrogant person will do neither. An insecure person fails to evaluate,
because that could get in the way of obtaining approval. A confident
person is open to suggestions and seeks wise counsel. An insecure person
drinks the Kool-Aid in an effort to obtain approval rather than to obtain
improvement. You don't always have to be right or weigh every little
thing. In many cases, the choice doesn't matter. For example, you're out
with friends and someone suggest stopping into a shop that looks
interesting. Probably, there's no harm in going along to get along in this
situation. That's just being sociable. The danger comes when the issue
affects your life or your basic perception of the world and you adopt a
particular view without really thinking about it. This is how most people
pick their religious and political views, and it's why we are cautioned not
to discuss politics or religion. Most people feel threatened when their
views in these areas are questioned, because that's tantamount to
questioning the group that gives them approval. And an honest answer might
mean sacrificing that approval. Generally speaking, making people feel
threatened does not lead to a good time to be had by all. In your own
case, do you apply independent judgment, or do you engage in
approval-seeking behavior? If the latter, it means your brainpower is lying
dormant on the issues of most importance to you. Are you sure that's a good
strategy? |
2. Finance tip
Now is the time for planting gardens, in much of the USA. In the more
northern parts, you can plant "cold weather" crops like cabbages,
lettuces, and onions. The more delicate plants like tomatoes need to
wait, unless you are prepared to cover them with a heavy cloth each
night. Organic gardening is really the way to go. In addition to
helping you stay (or become) healthy, it saves you money. You can buy
seeds or small starter plants for a few bucks, and enjoy several times
your investment all through the summer. If you don't have a yard, you
can grow in pots. Windowsill planting is one solution for people who
live in high-rise apartments. You can find supplies for patio, yard, and
window growing of veggies and herbs at any garden center.
I do not use Miracle Gro or other synthetic crap. This poison leaves
salts in the soil. I have a neighbor who uses Miracle Gro, and even
though we use the same plants from the same place mine always outproduce
his and my tomatoes and pepper are noticeably richer in color and taste.
Yet, I use no fertilizer.
That is, I use no chemical fertilizer. I do use an organic product
called Garden Tone, and highly recommend it. Unlike my neighbor's plot,
mine is full of big, healthy earthworms. I also have a composting
barrel, which makes rich food for my plants.
It's hard to say how much money I save on my food bill. As large as
that amount is, it's puny compared to what I save on medical costs. Good
food is a requirement for a healthy body. Grow your own and save. |
3. Security tip
Over the past couple of years, the federal govt has accelerated the
failed economic policies that are based on the idea that you can raise
the level of a lake by draining the water out. This is even worse than
the "something for nothing" philosophy that dominates the minds of
normal morons. Today, we have uber-morons (in the employ of criminals)
taking this stupidity to another level entirely. They are doing that
with things like the Porkulus Package--which predictably stimulated the
loss of millions of jobs by draining capital out of the economy.
The money the govt transfers to the corporations that employ members
of CONgress doesn't fall from the sky. The govt must tax or borrow that
money, which means this capital is no longer available to provide jobs.
This insanity/stupidity/theft has not abated, despite its devastating
consequences.
As the Great Depression lumbers on, nongovernmental crime is
increasing. The good news is there's an excellent resource for
protecting yourself from this kind of crime. See it at
www.nrahq.org/rtbav. Those last
five letters stand for "Refuse To Be A Victim." That's pretty good
advice, in my book. |

4. Health tip/Fitness tips
The fat loss season has begun. What mystifies me is why people think it's OK to be fat the
rest of the year, then go to extremes to lean down for summer? And if you look
at the results of that effort (and cost and misery), what you see in most cases
is someone who is temporarily just fat instead of really fat.
If your
reason for getting rid of the excess body fat is "to look better for summer,"
that's a lame reason. Here are some good reasons:
- To
look good all the time.
-
Because I hate beating myself up over this.
-
Because feeling attractive also boosts my confidence.
- To
eliminate the need to "diet" or engage in any other torture to lose a few
pounds that will only come back.
- To
lower my disease risk factors, so I enjoy a body free of debilitating and
costly illnesses.
- So
my clothes fit properly.
-
Because doing so involves eating good food, which is in itself a reward.
-
Because doing so requires the discipline of eating properly sized portions,
and practicing discipline is never a bad idea.

5. Factoid
Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks;
otherwise it will digest itself. CONgress produces a new layer of mucous
every day, but continues to digest our economy via runaway spending. |

7. Thought for the Day
Women blink nearly twice as much as men. When it comes to stealing your
money and giving it to their corporate employers, members of CONgress
don't even blink. They just do it. |
