1. Brainpower tip
In our previous issue, I misused the expression "begs the question." Special
thanks to Jaime for pointing this out. And my apologies to our readers.
Language is how we express ideas. Unfortunately, for this reason language is
also a tool for controlling ideas and distorting judgment. Language abuse
routinely disguises evil as being good. When we tolerate language abuse, we
establish a brain bypass. And that can't be good.
Consider, for example, how CONgress continues to inflict us with Daylight
Carnage Time.
For the three weeks following this mandated sleep deficit disorder, insurance companies see
a spike in traffic fatalities and industrial injuries.
This means that, twice a year,
members of CONgress are murdering more people than were killed
in the WTC attacks. These people make $190,000 a year plus perks; we
should expect them to know the effects of their own legislation so ignorance
is no excuse. Thus, I use the word murder because they surely know this
kills vast numbers of Americans each year but they do it anyhow.
I don't say that to be emotional, just to observe
the facts as they are.
Instead of referring to this bad public policy as the heartless population
reduction measure that it is, CONgress has the gall to call it Daylight
"Savings" Time. Though what is saved has never been identified.
It's not daylight, because it gives us an extra hour of darkness each
morning (thus also wasting electricity in addition to wasting lives).
You may recall that members of CONgress wanted our
thanks for "saving energy" by extending the morning darkness time by a
couple of months. There's that language manipulation again. By this
"logic," people who get mugged should thank the mugger for saving them
money. Because either alleged benefit must
defy logic to actually exist, the name applied to this bad public policy
is a blatant lie.
As a society, we
tolerate this slaughter and energy waste because we tolerate the
language manipulation that conceals them.
What we need to
do is not permit the use of manipulative language. When people abuse us
with it, we need to refer to things as they are.
Don't let false labels redefine reality.
We can see things more clearly, and thus evaluate them more
intelligently, if we strip off the labels that are contrary to fact. |
2. Finance tip
From an IRS eNL (copied verbatim):
**********
Although most people won’t be filing their tax returns for several
months, the dog days of summer are actually a great time to start
planning for the tax filing season by ensuring your records are
organized. Whether you are an individual taxpayer or a business owner,
you can avoid headaches at tax time with good records because they will
help you remember transactions you made during the year.
Here are a few things the IRS wants you to know about recordkeeping.
Keeping well-organized records also ensures you can answer questions
if your return is selected for examination or prepare a response if you
are billed for additional tax. In most cases, the IRS does not require
you to keep records in any special manner. Generally speaking, you
should keep any and all documents that may have an impact on your
federal tax return.
Individual taxpayers should usually keep the following records
supporting items on their tax returns for at least three years:
Bills Credit card and other receipts Invoices Mileage logs Canceled, imaged or substitute checks or any other proof of
payment Any other records to support deductions or credits you claim on
your return
You should normally keep records relating to property until at least
three years after you sell or otherwise dispose of the property.
Examples include:
A home purchase or improvement Stocks and other investments Individual Retirement Arrangement transactions Rental property records
If you are a small business owner, you must keep all your employment
tax records for at least four years after the tax becomes due or is
paid, whichever is later. Examples of important documents business
owners should keep Include:
Gross receipts: Cash register tapes, bank deposit slips, receipt
books, invoices, credit card charge slips and Forms 1099-MISC Proof of purchases: Canceled checks, cash register tape
receipts, credit card sales slips and invoices Expense documents: Canceled checks, cash register tapes, account
statements, credit card sales slips, invoices and petty cash slips
for small cash payments Documents to verify your assets: Purchase and sales invoices,
real estate closing statements and canceled checks
**********
Any sane human being looking at this has got to wonder what purpose
is served by inflicting us with such a compliance burden. Of course,
there is no purpose served. This whole asinine program costs more than
the total revenue it brings the federal government. It's worse than
pointless.
All this nonsense can be completely eliminated. See

3. Security tip
We saw in a previous issue that CMRA's aren't all that great a privacy
or security measure. I promised to give you better options in future
issues. One such option is the standard Post Office box. Try to set it
up such that doesn't put your name with your present home address. But
they ask you for your address, so how can you do this? Several ways.
Essentially, you'll use another address that becomes a "ghost address" for you.
For example:
- If you recently moved, use your previous address.
- Use a business address.
- Use the CMRA as the address.
- Lease an apartment for the shortest term available. Use that
address. Then, sublet the rental property until the lease expires.
- Same as above, but your LLC rents the box and you also rent an
office or virtual office (it has a physical address) from a company
that provides that service.
-
Swap with someone else. The drawback here is if one of you has
trouble, the other person's address becomes the target.
- Pay a friend or other trusted person a fee to rent the box in
his/her name and address.
- Pay a small business to rent the box or to just accept
deliveries for you. Many small business owners would welcome the
added income.
- Offer to rent the upper left corner ceiling tile of your
attorney's office, and use that office as the address.
- Have your attorney's office rent the box in its name.
If you are truly paranoid, have your P.O. Box in a town other than
where you live. Pay someone there to check the box twice a week and
forward the contents to a fake name at your current physical address.
This is time-consuming and expensive, and not worth it for most people.
Remember also that if you give your real address to anyone at your
ghost address you do leave a trail. Even your most trusted friend can be
deceived into revealing your address to the wrong party. So, consider
that in your overall strategy.
If you simply want to disconnect your name from your current address,
here's a cheap way to do it. Simply swap names and addresses with
someone you see regularly. For example, you have a coworker you see
every day. Your mail goes to her place and her mail goes to yours. You
trade it at work.
Keep the arrangement secret, and don't let anyone else join. Once you
get multiple people involved, you'll lose control and you'll also get
invitees you don't know and that's asking for trouble.
Another cheap way to disconnect your name from your current address
is to simply use a fake name wherever practical. Don't use fake names or
aliases in an attempt to delay or avoid payments. Use them only to
protect your privacy. |
4. Health tip/Fitness tips
Some quick questions:- Have you ever had heel or
arch pain?
- Do your first few steps out of bed in
the morning cause severe pain in
your heel?
- Does your
heel hurt after jogging or
playing tennis?
- Do you suddenly get pain in
your heel or arch "for no
reason" even if you're just
sitting at your desk at work?
If you answered yes to any of the
above questions, you may have
plantar fascilitis. What can make it
so baffling is that "for no reason" part. How can you
hurt your foot, just sitting at your
desk or just by getting up in the
morning?
The reality is that moment of intense pain isn't when the damage
occurs. In fact, the damage typically occurs in small amounts
over time. The key to preventing
this kind of pain is also tied to
time. You need persistent attention
to several factors so that you
prevent damage from occurring
repeatedly and thus accumulating. |
 |
If you get this condition, don't just take a pain reliever for it. The real
problem is inflammation, and the causes are probably 3 or 4 in your case.- A pain reliever mutes the warning signal.
- Inflammation is part of your body's healing response. If you suppress
the inflammation, you suppress the healing. The problem will get even worse
over time.
- Don't attack inflammation directly, via anti-inflammatories. Attack the
causes of inflammation.
Anti-inflammatories do serve a purpose and do have their place. But they
merely address one symptom and do not lead to fixing the causes. Sometimes, it's
necessary to bring swelling down temporarily. But during that time, the rate of
healing slows dramatically and healing may stop altogether. |
Regarding plantar fascilitis, here's an article that explains
more about the topic:

As regular readers know, I was 48 years old in the picture (above,
right), taken in December 02 2008. I don't
diet down for summer. I don't have
good genes for maintaining a lean
body, either. I really have to be
conscientious and disciplined about
it. That doesn't mean I suffer, eat
bland foods, or starve myself.
At
www.supplecity.com, you'll find plenty of informative, authoritative articles on maintaining a lean, strong physique. It has nothing to do with long workouts or impossible to maintain diets. In fact:
- The best workouts are short
and intense.
- A good diet contains far more flavors and satisfaction than the typical American diet.
Nor does it mean being hungry all
the time (you are less hungry on six
small meals a day than three large
ones), being weak from hunger (on a
proper dietary regimen, you will
have much more energy than
otherwise), or "giving up pleasures"
(I have no idea where this concept
comes from, unless a person
considers being sick a "pleasure.")

5. Factoid
Al Capone's business card said he was a used furniture dealer. Good thing
it didn't say "Senator" or people would have thought he was a crook! |
