Bio of ELO,
The Electric Light Orchestra
FORMED: 1971,
Birmingham, England
DISBANDED: 1988
Formed in 1971 from the ashes of one of Britain's greatest eccentric rock bands, the Move,
the Electric Light Orchestra drew heavily from the ornately lumbering "I Am the
Walrus"-period Beatles. This is shown to extreme effect on their oddly engaging
debut, No Answer. Of particular note is the track "10538 Overture."
Move
expatriates Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne, and Bev Bevan formed the initial nucleus of ELO, but
multi-instrumentalist Wood split after No Answer to form the bizarrely '50s-influenced
Wizzard. Their sophomore release, ELO II, retained some of the off-key crunch of the
debut, but it is clearly a transition to what became a very slick, highly orchestrated
pop-hit factory.
Between 1975 and 1981, ELO managed 17 Top 40 hits, among which were
"Evil Woman" (#10), "Telephone Line" (#7), "Don't Bring Me
Down" (#4), "Hold on Tight" (#10), "Shine a Little Love" (#8) and
the wonderful "Can't Get It Out of My Head" (#9). ELO also scored a #24 hit with
"Do Ya," which was the Move's only stateside chart hit.
ELO increasingly became
a side project to leader Jeff Lynne's successful outside artist productions, which
included Brian Wilson, Dave Edmunds, Tom Petty, the Traveling Wilburys, Randy Newman, and
George Harrison. ~ Rick Clark, All-Music Guide
